HDTV Basics

HDTV is a television system that uses digital television (DTV) signals to transmit and display TV pictures that are up to five times clearer and sharper than what the majority of viewers watch now on their analog sets. HDTV is also capable of displaying the rectangular widescreen view familiar to moviegoers, a view called the 16:9 ratio. Conventional TV displays have a 4:3 ratio. HDTV programs can include six-channel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround-sound audio that can feed into a home theater system, which many consumers have already connected to their DVD players.

HDTV can only be transmitted on a digital TV signal. Under a mandate the Federal Communications Commission adopted in 1996, TV stations are supposed to switch from their old analog channels to new digital TV frequencies by the end of 2006, although government officials are still debating how to meet that deadline and how to ensure consumers who don't have access to digital TV signals won't get shut out. New FCC mandates have gone into effect to ensure most new TVs sold in the next two years have digital tuners.

LCD

LCD or, Liquid Crystal Display is a display device for generating color images using a matrix of LCD pixel elements. Each pixel element consists of 3 sub-pixels and an RGB color filter of red (R), green (G), and blue (B). By controlling the voltage to each sub-pixel of an LCD, each cluster of RGB pixels can create a full spectrum of colored light. LCDs are used in flatscreen displays, cameras and notebook computers to name a few. Nearly every projector made with LCD technology uses 3 separate LCDs, one each for red, green and blue. Light from the projector lamp is separated into RGB with a set of dichroic mirrors. The three light beams (RGB) are passed through separate LCDs and recombined to project a color image. LCDs or Liquid Crystal Displays are designed for front or rear projection in conjunction with a screen similar to those required for slide or movie presentations.

DLP Projector

Digital Light Processors (or DLP) projectors utilize an amazing electronic and microscopic mirror assembly to transmit video images onto a projection screen. Millions of tiny mirrors are controlled by very complex electronic circuitry to allow the projector's light to be directed to the screen. DLP projectors have now reached the price points of medium-priced CRT projectors and offer the resolution, brightness, and aspect ratios required for High Definition TV performance. As these projectors utilize a projection lamp and adjustable lens (similar to LCD projectors) their placement in relation to the screen is variable according to each projector's specification. Although most DLP projectors offer a higher brightness level than any other type of projector, a dark room is still important for optimum performance.

Plasma TV

This new technology utilizes a unique display panel that alleviates the need for a cathode ray type picture tube. At the present time this type of TV is somewhat expensive. A major benefit of the plasma display is that it has been sized to accommodate new HDTV 16:9 aspect ratios and is similar in pixel resolution to a personal computer monitor, thus allowing drastically improved picture clarity.
